TANZANIA – Unbox Diversity

Tanzania is a country that surprises you with its natural beauty & diversity with each passing day and place you visit. Beautiful Beaches, Nature Reserves, Masai Tribes, Dynamic Kilimanjaro Mountain, Diverse Neighbourhoods of Dar Es Salaam, World Heritage Stone Town and the list is endless. As such any length of time to explore Tanzania is less, but it requires a minimum of 10 days to take a feel of its dynamism.

“Take a feel of its dynamism”

Start with the capital city Dar Es Salaam, famous for its neighborhoods, fish market, village museum, and local casinos. Early morning you can visit the famous Kivukoni fish market which is not very far from the city center, it’s a great experience to see lakhs of fishes stacked and fishermen coming on the boat to sell their catch, next can be the village museum which literally depicts the different colors and gives you a glimpse of different diverse regions of Tanzania, from there you can go to visit the Indian Neighbourhood where you can find the worship places of all the religions depicting the religious diversity.

Next morning you can board the ferry to one of the best & serene islands in the whole world, Zanzibar.

There are regular fast ferries operated by Azam Group and are very comfortable with different classes of travel. Once you arrive and are done with the formalities, head towards Paje beach, alternatively you can stay in stone town also but I strongly recommend Paje as it would give you the essence of Zanzibar.

There are varieties of accommodations available right from hostels to luxury resorts. One can easily spend 5 days in Zanzibar and still, it compels you to stay more. There are a lot of activities and adventures in Zanzibar, whether you like to Scuba Dive, Swim with the Dolphins, Snorkel, Kite Surf or just relax on the serene beach having different shades of blue water and the white sand.

Paje is as exciting by the night as it is during the day, there are parties at different venues on each day whether it be Teddy’s Bar on Wednesdays or Jambo on Fridays, the parties are amazing and full of young people enjoying the English & African music. You can also do stargazing at night, as the skies are very clear and there are a lot of stars.

One whole day should be spent in Stone Town which is a World Heritage Site. Stone Town has a lot to offer right from its amazing architecture which is being inspired by many regions and cultures of the world, the variety of food, old street markets to the friendly and hospitable people of different religions. Just get around exploring and soak in as much as you can of this town.

After this experience, it’s time to explore and witness the amazing wildlife of Africa. You can take a ferry back to Dar es Salaam and board a flight to Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha Airport (Kilimanjaro has more frequent and cheaper connections than Arusha), alternatively, you can take a flight from Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro or Arusha which is a fairly expensive option. Kilimanjaro needs no introduction, with its varied flora and fauna it has a lot to offer. If you have a good number of days at your disposal then you can hike up or alternatively you can have a good view and can proceed to Arusha where a huge diversity awaits at the Tarangire and Serengeti National Parks & Ngorongoro Crater.

There are a number of Safari providers in Arusha, so you can book with one to start early the next morning, I recommend Bobby Tours as they have a good service and a decent price. Usually, the safari is of 2 days starting with the Tarangire National Park first where you can witness a huge number of birds and animals mainly African Buffalos, Zebras, Giraffes, Elephants, Leopards, Lions etc. from the open Safari vehicle with a variety of birds and also the amazing view of the Tarangire river.

After the full day safari, you can stay and relax at one of the jungle camps which is a great experience. Next morning you are being taken to Serengeti National Park & Ngorongoro Crater. This amazing experience of wildlife and vast lands would leave you astonished, also you can visit the Masai village right inside the National Park to see how they dwell & interact with them. The crater was being formed by the volcanic eruptions and it’s the since millions of years. With millions of African Wildebeests and Zebras flocking in during migration, giraffes, Lion, Leopards, Baboons, Ostriches, Elephants, Hippos, Rhinos, and a lot more animals, this safari is truly worth every dime.

Although Tanzania is never enough and has a lot more to offer each time you visit, these are the must experience to get a feel of this diversely beautiful country.

Turkish Churro

For the Sweet Tooth in Turkey

Turkey has a lot to offer for the sweet lovers. Turkish sweets are renowned and loved worldwide for their rich ingredients and taste. Some of the must haves are

Lokum

Also known as Turkish Delight. This undoubtedly is the brand ambassador of Turkish sweets. It is Jelly based sweet dusted with sugar powder and comes in hundreds of flavours to choose from. The basic ones are rose, pomegranate, pistachio, mastic, orange etc. There are a lot of upgraded versions of Lokum too which ranges from flavours like chocolate filled with nuts, nougat, herbs etc. This definitely is a must have and makes a very good souvenir to take back home for family and friends. You can find Lokum at almost every third shop in the touristic areas, specially Grand Bazar. A good advice is to get them packed then and there rather than taking the pre packed boxes.

BAKLAVA

The rich sweet pastry, having each layer filled with assorted nuts & sugar syrup and topped up with a lot of chopped pistachios would make your mouth melt each time you think of it (happening with me at this time as I am writing about it). Some places in Istanbul serves different flavored versions of Baklava too. The best places to have Baklava are the sweet shops and bakeries around Taksim Square.

TOLUMBA

Beware of its sweetness. This deep fried dough based sweet is being made in different shapes and sizes and it’s soaked in sugar syrup till the time every bit of it gets the shiny layer of sugar. It’s very sweet in taste, easily available at almost every corner of Istanbul and other cities.

HELVA

Helva_and_dondurmaTypical asian sweet made from Tahini (sesame paste). Very thick textured and usually contains dried fruits and nuts. A very good and rich sweet for the appetite as well. Turkish people love to savor it anytime.

 Dondurma

The world famous Turkish Ice Cream. This is very different than the normal ice cream which you have tasted before. It is being made from goat milk and some natural gums found in Turkey. Dondurma has a sticky texture and it doesn’t melts but when you take it in your mouth, it tastes very smooth. Comes in a lot of different flavours. The main attraction is the sellers selling dondurma on the streets. They are dressed in traditional Turkish attire, would call you up while you walk on streets, play with a large chunk of Dondurma stuck on a rod, make you taste different flavours and all that with a lot of smiles.

“Save the best for the last they say!!!”

Save the best for the last they say!!! This truly defines Baklava, as it is the best turkish sweet and a trip to Turkey  is incomplete without savoring this mouth watering sweet. Loaded with rich nuts such as pistachios, walnuts etc., Baklava is a hard to resist sweet layered pastry which vanishes as soon as it hits your taste buds and takes you to a different state of mind with that wow!! Feel. Baklava comes in various versions and I recommended to savor all of them.

Veg Meal

A Vegetarians guide to Istanbul

While travelling, It sometimes become tough to find vegetarian food. Being a pure vegetarian I also was skeptical while making plans to go to Turkey, which is world famous for its Kebabs and a lot of other non-vegetarian dishes, but trust me, Turkey has a lot to offer for vegetarians too. Here I am sharing a few vegetarian Turkish delicacies which would be a delight to your taste buds.

Çiğ Köfte

‘Raw Meat’, is the translation….Don’t worry you still are reading about Vegetarian food in Turkey. This dish traditionally is Raw Meat Balls but the vegetarian version is more popular. It’s made with Bulgur, tomato paste, onion and a lot of turkish spices and herbs.

cig-kofte-1573868

This incredibly simple delicacy is rich in taste and also very filling, turkish people savour it as a starter or an appetizer but for many it acts as a main dish too. You can ask for the dish to be less spicy or more, but it definitely would be a little bit spicy so prepare your tastebuds accordingly. This is not to be missed. A very economical and easily available option for vegetarians.

GOZLEME

This cheese and spinach filled dough pancake is also a very good and filling option for the vegetarians. This is being served with different accompaniments like Cacik (Vegetable Yogurt),spicy Ezme ( tomato & chilli dip), Muhammara (walnut & pepper paste) and Barbequed Onions dipped in sweet syrup. If you have this, you will not ask for anything more as it’s great in taste and very filling.

This Turkish delicacy is basically Jacket Potato filled with vegetables, onions and sweet corn, topped up with herbs, spices cheese and mayonnaise. Very delicious and easy to get, favourite lunchtime snack of Turks. This on the go snack is a very good option for vegetarians.

CORBA

Means Soup in Turkish. Turkish people consider it as a staple for everyday meal. A very healthy and filling thick textured option it is for the vegetarians. Comes in varied options both Vegetarian and Non Vegetarian. Vegetarian options mainly includes Mercimek Corba (Lentil Soup), Domates Corba (tomato Soup) or a mix of Lentils and Tomato soup. The best choice is Lentil soup, it’s very delicious.

Sigara Böreği

These are the Cigar shaped cheese filled snack being fried and served with salad and a variety of dips ranging from vegetable yogurt to the spicy  tomato. These also act as very good tummy fillers and are great in taste. Easy  on both stomach and pocket. Easily available at almost every food joint in the touristic cities of Turkey.

Clay Pot Meal

IMG_1375This is a must try if you go to Turkey. Typically available in Cappadocia and the nearby cities. This is basically meat based meal but is prepared in a vegetarian version too. The vegetable curry made with mild spices is being filled in a bottle  shaped clay pot, sealed with clay above and being cooked slowly in earthen ovens in order to retain the quality and taste of the vegetables used. The curry is being served with rice and is very good in taste. It takes a little time to cook but the wait is truly worth and also the way they break the clay pot in front of you with a hammer is all the more interesting.

Not just Spicy food, Turkey has a lot to offer for the sweet lovers too.

3 Days in Cape Town

‘Mother City’ as it is popularly known amongst the locals, Cape Town has a lot of diversity to offer, right from Historical to Natural to Modern. One can perfectly spend 3 days time in here by experiencing different dynamics that this city has to offer.

Day1

Start by a walk towards the V & A waterfront and take a fast ferry to Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also referred as The Symbol of  Triumph of Humanity in Adversity.

DSC_0975

It’s the place where Nelson Mandela spent 18 out of 27 years in prison and mainly the political prisoners were kept. A guided tour of the whole island is being given and also of the Prison by one of the Prisoners’ who actually have served there, you will be astonished to hear what they have experienced.

It’s an experience in itself which would hit the chords of your heart . After spending a few hours here, take the ferry back to the waterfront. The waterfront is a great place to experience food, culture, shopping, music and many other dynamics of South Africa with beautiful views of Table Mountain and the harbour. As the sun sets you can move back to the hotel/hostel and get geared up for the amazing nightlife of Cape Town. There are number of Pubs and Discos with great music, beer and food. The parties, full of locals & tourists  go on till morning.

DAY2

After a well spent first day, start off the day 2 with visit to Boulder’s Beach, home to the beautiful African Penguins.

DSC_0102-minYou can swim at the beach and admire the pretty creatures but they are a bit dangerous too, so be cautious. Head to The Cape Point, the place where Atlantic & Indian ocean meet, It’s a place and a feel which is hard to express in words.

Climb up to the Cape Point and the Lighthouse to see the amazing topography & blue waves hitting the rocks which is a treat to the eyes. You can hike down to the Cape of Good Hope or reach by the vehicle you came to Cape Point on. Portuguese discovered and used this point to park their ships. The speed of wind here is so much that you literally would have to do a lot of effort to maintain the balance while standing.

There are Ostriches and Baboons on the way to keep your eyes entertained during your way back to the Cape Town. There are a lot of good Restaurants and Cafes on the way where you can relax and try different cuisines.

Day3

Start early by climbing up to the most famous and iconic sight of Cape Town and a World Heritage Site too, Table Mountain.Breathtaking views blessed with abundant varieties of flora & fauna. You can also take a cable ride, but climbing on foot is highly recommendable, the journey is as rewarding as the destination. You can spend hours at this place and it will keep astonishing you.

DSC_0188

Once you are over experiencing this beauty, you can get down and explore the amazing streets of Cape Town, the most happening  and famous amongst which is Long Street, alternatively you can also explore the Asian Neighbourhood.

There are a lot more things to do in Cape Town be it Sky Diving or visiting the National Park, but if you are having a time constraint, then this is how you can maximize it without rushing a lot.

A Few Tips

  1. People here are friendly, but it’s always advisable to be cautious and confident. There is tourist police wing which is always  at the disposal and can help you with  anything.
  2. Cape Town has some amazing hostels, so rather than paying a lot for the hotel room, try hostels. The best one is ‘The Backpack’ on New Church Street. It’s a true value for money.
  3. There are a number of eating joints with different cuisines and great food. It’s always recommendable to leave a tip as the waiters are very hospitable & don’t earn much there.
  4. Buy some great and out of the box souvenirs from Cape Town coz this city is worth cherished for throughout the life.

7 Days in Turkey

A week’s time is very less to stay and take a perfect feel of this beautiful country, still a lot can be explored and experienced on a stipulated time frame of 7 days in Turkey. There are a lot of options for cities to be visited in Turkey, as each one has its own charm and flavour. The major ones are Istanbul, Cappadocia and Pamukkale. These 3 destinations combined would give you different experiences such as historic, natural, modern, nightlife etc.

turkey1-mme

Start the journey with Cappadocia (Goreme). This place is often called as Mars on Earth because of its unusual topography and  beautiful landscapes.Relax, walk around Goreme and take a feel of its beauty on the first day of arrival. Savor the traditional clay pot meal in the evening, you will love the taste and the way its been served.

turkey2mme

You can take a night walk around the cold breeze. Do book a cave hotel in advance as sometimes it gets very difficult to find one due to high tourist inflow.

The cave hotel surely would be an experience in itself. Also book the Hot Air Balloon Ride  for the next morning. There are many companies offering the same, try to walk around and get the best possible price which ranges from 120USD to 150USD depending on the company and the density of tourists. The balloon ride typically starts at 5 A.M. in the morning so it’s better to get to the bed early.

Next morning starts with the balloon ride, that will leave you amazed admiring the beauty of this place from the sky and there would be so many balloons at different heights that it would give you a feel as if somebody has painted this setting. You will have a 360’ view and it would be wow from every angle you look. After the flight, there is a small Champagne party and you get the certificates on your way back to the hotel.

After coming back, you have an array of options to explore, you may go to the explore the topography, being referred as the red tour and green tour or I would suggest you to hire a Quad Bike and go to explore the underground city of Kaymakli which is an approximate one hour ride from Goreme, enjoy the journey and beautiful scenes, small villages, potato fields etc. while your way back visit Goreme Open Air Museum, a very enriching experience of the history and early settlements.

You can either take a bus to Pamukkale which is an overnight journey or stay a day more in Cappadocia.Pamukkale is one of the most astonishingly beautiful natural places I’ve been to. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travertine Terraces.
